Getting Your Product Catalog Ready Before Launch

Catalog prep is the most underestimated part of an e-commerce timeline. Here's what actually needs to be ready, and why it matters.

When an e-commerce launch runs late, the cause is more often the product catalog than the store build itself. It's consistently underestimated, so it's worth being specific about what "ready" actually means before development even starts.

Consistent product data structure

Every product needs the same fields filled in consistently — title format, description length, size/variant naming — or the store ends up looking inconsistent even with good design underneath it. Deciding this structure before entering hundreds of products saves a painful cleanup pass later.

Real photography, not placeholders

Stock photos or low-resolution phone photos are the most visible sign of an unfinished-looking store. Product photography doesn't need to be expensive, but it does need to be consistent — same lighting, same background, same angle conventions across the catalog.

Accurate inventory and variant data

Sizes, colors, and stock counts need to be accurate before launch, not "roughly right for now." Nothing damages trust in a new store faster than a customer ordering something that turns out to be out of stock or doesn't actually exist in the size shown.

Shipping and tax rules defined per product where needed

Some products may need different shipping rules (oversized items, hazardous materials, digital vs physical). These need to be identified and configured before launch, not discovered after a customer places an order that breaks the checkout flow.

Start catalog prep early, in parallel with design

We recommend starting catalog data collection at the same time as design work begins, not after — since it consistently takes longer than people expect, and it's the one part of the timeline that's entirely in the store owner's hands rather than the development team's.
