Migrating an Online Store Without Losing Sales Momentum

Store migrations carry real risk of lost orders and lost SEO if rushed. Here's how we actually protect momentum during a switch.

Migrating an existing online store to a new platform carries more risk than a typical website redesign, because there's live revenue at stake, not just traffic. Here's how we approach protecting that momentum during the switch.

Full data migration, tested before cutover

Products, customer accounts, and order history all need to move across accurately — and need to be checked, not assumed correct. We migrate to a staging environment first and compare record counts and spot-check data against the original store before anything goes live.

Preserving SEO through the switch

Just like a general website redesign, product and category URLs often change during a platform migration. Every old URL needs to redirect to its new equivalent, or you lose both existing search rankings and any external links pointing at old product pages.

Keeping the old store live until the new one is proven

We don't recommend taking an old store offline the moment a new one launches. Running both in parallel briefly, with the new store handling a portion of traffic first, catches issues before they affect all of your customers at once.

Customer communication around the switch

If customer accounts or saved payment details need re-entry on the new platform, telling customers this in advance (via email, a banner) reduces support requests and confusion far more than letting them discover it mid-checkout.

Choosing a low-traffic launch window

Migrations go live during your store's lowest-traffic period, not your busiest, so if something needs a quick fix post-launch, it affects the fewest possible customers while it's being resolved.
