Custom-Coded vs CMS: How to Actually Decide

Template answers like 'always use WordPress' or 'custom code is always better' both miss the point. Here's the actual decision framework.

Every few weeks someone asks us the same question in different words: should our new site be custom-coded or built on a CMS like WordPress? The honest answer is that neither option is universally better — it depends on two things: how often your content changes, and how specific your functionality needs are.

Start with how often you'll touch it

If your team plans to add blog posts, update product pages, or swap out promotional banners every week, a CMS is almost always the right call. Fighting a developer for every text change gets expensive and slow fast. WordPress, in particular, has a large enough plugin ecosystem that most common needs — contact forms, SEO fields, image galleries — are already solved.

Then look at what the site actually needs to do

Custom code earns its cost when you need something specific: a booking system tied to your own inventory rules, a calculator that runs a proprietary formula, or tight integration with an internal tool that no plugin was built for. Bending a CMS to do something it wasn't designed for often costs more in workarounds than building it properly from scratch would have.

The middle ground most businesses land on

In practice, a lot of the sites we build are a hybrid: a CMS like WordPress for the pages that change often (blog, services, testimonials), with a custom-built section handling the one piece of specific functionality the business actually needs. That way you're not paying custom-development rates for a static About page, and you're not stretching a plugin past its limits for the part of the site that matters most.

If you're not sure which side of that line your project falls on, that's a normal thing to work out together before any code gets written — it's usually a five-minute conversation once we understand what you're actually trying to do.
